Saudi Arabia appoints a female ambassador to the United States

Saudi Arabia has named Princess Rima the first female ambassador to the United States. She takes over the post after the little brother of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Princess Rima bint Bandar was appointed on Saturday to take over the ambassador position in the United States after Prince Khalid bin Salman. The Crown Prince’s little brother will move into a position as Deputy Defense Minister in Saudi Arabia.

The appointment is linked to the strained relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia in the wake of the murder of the regime-critical journalist Jamal Khashoggi last October.

After first denying knowledge of what had happened when Khashoggi disappeared on October 2, the kingdom finally admitted that agents from Saudi Arabia killed him inside the country’s consulate in Turkey.

–  “The appointment of a new representative means that the government of Riyadh is trying to reset relations with Washington and put two strokes under the answer in the Khashoggi case, although it seems rather unlikely in practice, at least to Congress,” said Middle Eastern researcher Kristian Ulrichsen Rice University.

After first denying knowledge of what had happened when Khashoggi disappeared on October 2, the kingdom finally admitted that agents from Saudi Arabia killed him inside the country’s consulate in Turkey.

It has been argued that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally was behind the murder, which Saudi Arabia has rejected. The Crown Prince, who is in fact the country’s actual leader, also holds the position of Defense Minister. The United States has threatened that it will come true if it turns out to be true that the Crown Prince was behind the killing of Khashoggi.
